Jane ended up visiting five different shops in her endeavours to find enough food to at least make a few meals. She collected her rations and bought various additional bits and pieces before managing to obtain more tins of pilchards for Marmaduke.

There was just enough time to get back to her flat, stow everything away, apply some lipstick and hurry back out again. She had to run to catch the bus as it was about to leave the stop as she approached, and jumped to make it onto the platform.

‘’Ere love, you was cuttin’ it fine,’ the cockney conductor rebuked her gently as he steadied her to prevent her from falling.

‘Yes, thank you, I’m sorry.’ She smiled gratefully at him and gave him her fare as she sank down on a nearby vacant seat.

She only needed to travel a few stops before leaving the bus for the underground to take her towards Euston Station. The city was busy and the air in the tube station smelt of stale humanity. Jane shuddered and was glad she had not yet been forced to seek shelter there at any time since the war had begun. The government had tried to stop people from heading there when the sirens had sounded since there was a chronic lack of facilities.

Jane thought they might as well have stood on the beach like King Canute trying to stop the tide from coming in. The tube train was as packed as the buses on the surface and she was glad to get off again, ready to track down the venue for this morale-boosting concert.

She hurried up the steps towards the surface, the air around her growing colder with every step. The concourse of the station was crowded. People going about their business, men in khaki uniforms. Jane was aware that she was running a few minutes late. Her mother would not be happy.

Whilst Elsa took quite a laissez-faire approach with most appointment times, when it came to her work she was a stickler for punctuality. Her mother had said that a dais had been set up ready for their performance. She spotted where the crowd appeared to be denser and headed in that direction.

‘Jane!’

She turned in surprise at the sound of her name being called from somewhere close behind her. To her astonishment she saw Arthur weaving his way through the crowd to meet her.

‘Arthur, what are you doing here? Is everything all right? Is Benson all right?’ she asked in some alarm, noting his unusually rosy cheeks above the layer of green wool wrapped around his neck.

‘Yes, everything is fine. I had a meeting earlier with the brigadier. He insisted that I come and accompany you here.’ Arthur waved his hand in the general direction of the crowd around the foot of the makeshift stage.

‘Meet me here, why? What did he say?’ Anxiety bubbled up in Jane’s stomach. Did the brigadier not trust her to handle the assignment? Had something gone on behind the scenes?

‘Everything is perfectly all right.
